It is telling that 10,000 marching publicly through the streets of Dublin could create the impact that 10,000 people moving silently through the nations’ hotels, hostels and B&Bs could not.

In Budget 2019, Government has the opportunity to act on this motion and address housing and homelessness now and into the future. In our Budget Choices briefing, Social Justice Ireland called on Government to allocate €1.25bn to:

- Introduce a cost rental system to deliver affordable tenancies.

- Increase the supply of social housing delivered by local authorities and Approved Housing Bodies.

- Make greater use of existing dwellings, particularly those 183,000 vacant properties across the State.

- Enhance the supports provided by homeless services, focusing on early intervention and prevention as well as an extension of Housing First.

The Government cannot ignore this crisis any longer.  It must put the needs of the many above the speculative interests of the few and delivery adequate housing.

On Wednesday, 10th October 2018, Social Justice Ireland will launch our Budget 2019 Analysis and Critique in Buswells Hotel at 11am.  This event will also be live streamed on our website.
