T'TIPing the balance for Global Justice?

Social Justice Ireland’s annual seminar to mark Global Justice Day will focus on TTIP, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. This is a series of trade negotiations being carried out, mostly in secret, between the EU and US which will have far reaching implications at home in Ireland and across the whole world.

Supporters of TTIP argue that its principal aim is to promote multilateral economic growth.  Its focus is on reducing the regulatory barriers to trade for big business in areas such as food safety law, environmental legislation, banking regulations and the sovereign powers of individual nations.

Those who criticise TTIP argue that the process has been secretive and undemocratic with nearly all information on negotiations coming from leaked documents and Freedom of Information requests. They fear that implementation of TTIP will lead to reduced standards and threats to safety.  They suggest it will have a negative impact on society and sustainability for the benefit of large multinational corporations.

This seminar will look at TTIP from a number of different perspectives and provide an overview of the issues involved and the challenges ahead, especially in context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
